Old customs for finding a husband

Different cultures and changing attitudes

Halloween night is not just a time for playing spooky games.

An old tradition, a little out of fashion these days, says you can discover the identity of your future husband on Halloween night.

One Scottish tradition is to peel an apple in one long strip on Halloween and throw the peel over your shoulder.

The peel should fall into the shape of a letter which is supposed to be the initial of your future husband.

Another Halloween folk tale is to sit in a dark room and look in a mirror at midnight. The face of your future husband is said to appear over your shoulder.

These old wives tales have fell out of fashion in the mid to late 20th century, but finding a husband is still a part of many woman’s life.

Discussing the cultural opinion of unmarried women around the world is a great way for Teachers of English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) to develop a dialogue with their students.

In Britain there are mixed messages for single women.

Some sections of society champion the independent career women, and yet others criticise the single and childless for failing to settle down.

Bridget Jones is considered the archetypal singleton with a series of failed relationships behind her and an inability to settle down.

In Japan and China there is still pressure on women to marry before they are 25.

There are a number of high-profile women in these cultures who have remained single even though they are over the age of 30.

Twice married actress Rosamund Kwan is still single, and looking great, at 49.

Actress and pop star Gigi Leung Wing-kei is 35 and unmarried despite having a huge fan base.

Discussing the different cultural approaches to finding a long-term partner, whether it is through folk tradition or modern dating methods, is a great way to help people learn a new language when Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).

There is a great demand across the world for native English speakers who wish to share their culture and language with others.

Not looking for a husband, though having a male friend would be nice! It is my feeling that a man and a woman need to become friends first, then go with the flow.

Good article. Thanks,
